Pummel

1997, 01:00 minutes, colour

The viewer is confronted by an extreme close up of the artist's face - teeth clenched and flesh reverberating to the violent pounding of an angry, self-loathing fist. With epileptic strobing, alternating frames display the stroking fist clutching. The sounds of construction, machinery and smashing metal are paired with the images. In this work I've attempted to test two techniques. The first is the use of ambient sound in combination with extremely rapid frame edits to create a rhythmic audio track in perfect synchronicity with the visuals. Thus, what you see is what you hear and vice versa. The second technique in practice is the use of sensational imagery unsupported by content. It is my belief that violence and sex assists memory.
